Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
