2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Reception
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a clearer vision.
The president noted that the developers is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
The news follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our audience.
The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to keep observing the evolution of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Background of the New Leader
The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Face the competition with unique powers, risks, and challenges that shift every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as creation progresses.
